1. What types of samples are tested?
Orchid Cellmark collects cheek swab samples from all tested parties. These are painless and non-invasive and can be collected within a matter of minutes.

2. Who needs to be tested in order to establish whether or not two people are siblings?
At a minimum, both alleged siblings must provide a sample. We also recommend that one or more of the “known" parents, such as the mother, provide a sample for analysis when sibling testing is requested. If the parents are not available, samples from other "known" siblings are also recommended.

3. Who needs to be tested to establish whether a child and potential grandparent are related?
The paternal grandparent(s) and the child should provide samples. A sample from the child’s mother is also strongly recommended.

4. What do I need to bring to my specimen collection appointment?
If your samples are being collected for a legal test, you will need to attend one of our 5000 specimen collection sites. You will need to bring government-issued photo identification such as a driver’s license. There is no fee for specimen collection.

5. Can I collect my samples at home?
If you are doing the DNA test for your own information, and book a Curiosity test, you may collect the samples at home using the Orchid Cellmark specimen collection kit.

6. How Is My Personal Information Protected?
Your privacy and security are important to us. Your samples are shipped to us in a tamper proof bag. Entry into our DNA testing facility is by restricted access only. All samples are bar-coded and all computer systems are secured. Results are sent to authorized individuals only and cases are only discussed with those who are authorized to do so. For the protection of the tested parties, results are not usually released over the phone except in unusual circumstances. All samples and DNA profiles are retained for a period of time, as required by accreditation guidelines but are destroyed after the requisite storage periods.
