While the incidence of violent crime has decreased over the past ten years, an increased awareness of the utility of DNA analysis in providing investigative leads and even solving crime has resulted in an increase in the numbers of cases submitted for DNA analysis. Recent statistics by the Bureau of Justice Statistics found:

  • Public DNA laboratories experienced a 73% increase in casework
  • Public DNA laboratories experienced a 135% increase in their casework backlogs
  • Rape and homicide cases alone make up approximately 350,000 cases of this backlog
  • The FBI laboratory alone has a backlog of over 1,000 DNA cases
