Forensic DNA
Evidence Storage
Please follow the directions below for storage of evidence for DNA testing at Orchid Cellmark. If you have any questions or need clarification on the instructions, please contact customer service at forensicservices@orchid.com or call 1-800-USA-LABS (872-5227).
- Most biological evidence is preserved best when stored dry and cold because dryness and lower temperatures reduce the rate of bacterial degradation of DNA. With the exception of liquid known whole blood samples, the colder the storage the better.
- DRIED STAINS: Store all dried stain material frozen (-20C˚) or refrigerated (4C˚) in separate paper containers. (Dried stains which are very old and have been stored at room temperature for months or years will obviously not be hurt significantly by additional short-term room temperature storage. Nevertheless, we recommend storing these samples cold until they can be shipped.)
- UNDRIED TISSUE: Store all tissue, bone, liquid urine, or other undryable biological material (except liquid blood standards, see below) frozen (-20C˚) in separate air tight containers. Avoid glass containers which can break when frozen. Do not place in formalin or formaldehyde.
- LIQUID BLOOD STANDARDS: Store all liquid known blood samples refrigerated (4C˚) in their original glass tubes. Do not freeze.
