Non-Standard Samples
There are certain cases when it is not possible to collect a cheek swab from the party to be tested. However since the DNA is the same in virtually every cell in the body, it is possible to obtain DNA from other sample types. In our laboratory, we refer to any non-cheek swab sample as a non-standard sample.
Non-standard samples require individual treatment following specialized laboratory procedures in order to maximize the probability of successfully extracting the DNA. While our laboratory makes every effort to obtain DNA from non-standard samples, we cannot guarantee that we will be successful in every case. Please note that due to the fact that there is extra work involved in processing a non-standard sample, there is a surcharge which will apply to the testing of such samples. Please see the Non-Standard Sample Fee Schedule.
Also depending on the circumstances under which the sample was collected, stored and shipped, a non-standard sample may or may not qualify as a proper “Chain of Custody" sample.
